Contests

The Burlington Writers Club is pleased to offer the opportunity to display your writing work in our annual contests: our student (elementary through high school) contest, and our adult contest.

2008 ADULT CONTEST RULES

1.  Adult writers living in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Randolph, and Rockingham Counties are eligible.

2.  Manuscripts, including poetry, must be the original, unpublished work of the contestant, not be pending publication, and must not have received a first place award in any competition.

3.  Writers may submit one (1) entry in each category. No entry may be placed in more than one category.

4.  Two (2) copies of each entry must be submitted, typed on one side of 8 ½  X 11 paper, double-spaced for prose, single-spaced for poetry. Mail each entry to the appropriate category manager. (See list on reverse.)

5.  No author's name is to appear on the manuscript. One 3 X 5 index card must accompany each entry, showing title, category, word count where applicable, name, address (including county) and telephone number of author.

6.  Burlington Writers Club members may enter free. Deadline for current year membership dues is Feb. 9, 2008.  Non-member entry fee is $5.00 for each Poetry entry and $8.00 for each Prose entry submitted. No cash accepted through the mail. Make checks or money orders payable to Burlington Writers Club.

7. Contest deadline is March 8, 2008. No entries postmarked after that date will be accepted. Entries which do not conform to all rules will be disqualified. Entries may be brought to the March meeting.

8.  All inquiries, or requests for return of manuscripts, judge's comments and winners' list, must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) with correct postage. Entries without SASE or not picked up at the Awards Banquet will be destroyed.

9.  First Place winners will receive Certificates of Merit and a minimum of $20.00.   The Lucille Yarbrough Special Award will be presented to the first place Poetry winner.  Second place winners will receive Certificates of Merit and $10.00.  Third Place winners will receive Certificates of Merit and $5.00.  Honorable Mentions will receive Certificates of Merit.

10.  First place winners will be asked to read their entries at the Awards Banquet (or to designate a reader).  Longer entries should be abbreviated so as not to exceed ten (10) minutes.

Important Notes:

Any category which does not have at least six (6) entries will be eliminated. 

First Place winners of the 2007 contest are not eligible to enter the categories in which they won.

A category manager is not eligible to enter the category she/he manages.

Manuscripts may be written upon by the judges.  Contestants should keep exact copies of all entries for future use.

Time and location for the 2008 Awards Banquet will be announced at a later date.  Writers may pick up all their entries at that time.

Entry must be designated for either 5 – 8 year olds, or 9 – 12 year olds.
                (Age group appropriateness will be included in judging.)
